orchid season!
i just looked at the date and realize how close we are to spring. One of my favorite ways to usher in the spring is to go to an Orchid Show. I usually go the the New York Botanical Gardens up in the Bronx, or to the show in Rockefeller Center. Both are spectacular.
In the past I’ve attended these shows as part of class, during a lunch break (when I worked in the Rockefeller area), and with my sister-in-law who absolutely loves orchids and makes her home a virtual orchid wonderland every spring. For me, the show has been a part of spring for quite a number of years now.
Here’s a couple of drawings of orchids from one of these shows. I’ll try to post some more soon. I’ll be attending the NYBG Orchid Show that starts February 28th, and of course I’ll be drawing and painting.

and the Oscar goes to…
Last night, like manymanymany other people, I watched the Academy Awards. I did a little drawing, too. The drama in the dresses of some of these ladies!
I drew as the stars arrived, and as the night went on. It was fun drawing from the tv. It made me feel like less of a couch potato!
See if you could recognize some of the stars and/or their dresses.

oh summer where art thou?!?!?!?!
i really can’t help thinking of sunnier days. this winter has been exceptionally cold . i can’t wait to see crowds like these again. lounging around in their shorts, strolling in the park. oh i can’t wait to see them again!

Carnival Italy February 5th
Today the Carnival in Italy begins for this year. And although I’ve never been, I have always found the event fascinating. The history of it, the culture, and of course the mysterious masks. They are always so fun to draw. They are comical, hauntingly beautiful, sometimes a little disturbing. But I guess that kind of reaction is what keeps me so interested.
Here are a few of drawings of the different kinds of “people” you might meet at an Italian carnival.

baby hands
my loving little boy. i think my favorite part of him is his hands. his little toes are a close second place, but since it’s winter, and his feet are covered all the time, i see his hands more often.
they are so lovely! the way he uses them, the way he sometimes looks at them as if he never saw them before. his little dimples-for-knuckles. one day, he was clenching one hand with the other and holding onto it as if he were afraid it would fly away! very fun to watch.
don’t mean blather on about james’ hands! but come on, they’re my baby’s hands! in them, there is everything. he holds it all! and often times drops it too..:)
so i wanted to capture them on paper, for i fear it will soon fly away away!

stay tuned, when summer comes, i may post some toezies!
